Antidote Europe\u2019s raison d\u2019etre: firstly, to inform the public about the harm done to human health and the environment as a result of flawed research methods, and secondly, to promote genuine scientific research. Our committee is opposed to animal experimentation on strictly scientific grounds.<\/p>\n

\n

The underlying pitfall lies in the fact that the results of animal experimenting can not be extrapolated to the human being, and neither can they be reliably extrapolated between different animal species. As a result, no amount of animal testing of a novel drug or therapy can realistically predict or reveal the toxic risk of the product with respect to human beings. Whilst thousands of chemicals currently in use have been passed as \u2018safe\u2019 on the basis of animal tests, many more thousands have not been assessed at all. It is now common knowledge that a substance considered harmless to some animal species may be highly toxic to others, as well as to humans.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, we are just as much \u2018guinea pigs\u2019 as the laboratory animals. This sad state of affairs is confirmed by the enormous number of deaths associated with drugs and chemicals. Prescription drugs are one of the leading causes of death in industrialised nations today. An even more dramatic statistic is the exponential increase in deaths due to cancer, associated with exposure to carcinogenic chemicals in the environment \u2013 also found in blood samples of every European or North American inhabitant. To this toll must be added the increasing number of people suffering from neurodegenerative diseases (e.g. Alzheimer\u2019s, Parkinson\u2019s, multiple sclerosis), and problems associated with hormonal function, such as male infertility.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

\n Dr. David Gortler is a pharmacologist, pharmacist and a Yale University-trained clinical and molecular biology bench research scientist with a subspecialty in the area of vascular medicine, lipid metabolism and investigational medicine. Following his education and postdoctoral training, he entered the private sector working in drug development. He later returned to the Yale University School of Medicine as a didactic professor of pharmacology and biotechnology. He also served as a faculty representative at Yale\u2019s Center for Bioethics. He left Yale upon being hired by U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a medical officer\/senior medical analyst, reviewing new drugs. \n\nDuring his senior executive leadership role at FDA, Dr. Gortler was tasked with advising the FDA commissioner on complex clinical and regulatory proposals, including advancing spearheading major, critical public health initiatives, including “Organ On a Chip\u201d as a method to reduce or eliminate animal testing as a requirement for new drug approval. <\/div>\n \n <\/div>\n \n <\/div>\n\n
